Prevention of Back Pain
Preventing backache in work requiring repetitive pulling/pushing
Pushing or pulling loads regularly can also cause back pain by exerting stress on the spine and back muscles. To avoid such injury observe the following precautions :
1. Try as much as possible to push or pull loads at waist level because it
is 1.2 times more difficult to push or pull the same load at chest level,
1.5 times harder at shoulder level and 3 times harder above shoulder
level.
2. Adjust the height of the working table to the waist level of tall
persons (approximately 100 cm.); shorter individuals can stand on a
platform.
3. Do not lift or set down heavy objects on the ground. The heaviest
objects should be handled on a work surface that is at least 50 cm
high.
4. Keep the top shelves for light weight objects. The topmost shelf
should never be higher than 175 cm.
5. Preventing back while doing heavy work.
Certain jobs require use of the body to a limit that exceeds the normal physical capacity of most individuals. Such heavy work results in more lower back injuries and more neck pain than light work. These back problems are usually caused by ‘fatigue’ or ‘poor posture’. To prevent back pain in such cases.
1. Lighten the workload.
2. Ventilate the work area to lower the temperature.
3. Increase the number and length of breaks.
4. Allow more space for movement.
5. Wear lightweight clothing.
6. Do a muscle warm-up before starting the work.
Correct driving position
1.
Use a back support (lumbar roll) at the curve of the back. The knees
should be at the same level or higher than the hips.
2. Move the seat close to the steering wheel to support the curve of
the back. The seat should be close enough to allow the knees to
bend and feet to reach the pedals.
