Back Pain in Pregnancy

Pre-Pregnancy Counseling

The physician should ask women who are contemplating pregnancy about their history of back problems. Women with a history of lower back pain should be informed about the increased risk of symptom recurrence during pregnancy. Before a woman becomes pregnant, encouraging her to become fit and resolving existing back problems is the key to back pain prevention .

Physically fit women who get 45 minutes or more of physical activity a day are less likely to develop lumbar pain during pregnancy. However, pre-pregnancy fitness does not seem to decrease the risk of developing sacroiliac pain.

Does Back Pain Disappear After Delivery ?

For majority of women, the birth of their baby will result in the disappearance of the backache associated with pregnancy. However, in some cases it may take several months for the pain to disappear completely.
