Myths of Back Pain

Myth : Drugs are most important for treatment of back pain.

Reality : Drugs have temporary and not curative effect. Medication should be used sparingly during the acute phase and that too for a short time. Evidence-based studies of lower back pain have clearly shown that the most important way to restore a spine’s function is to exercise the back. Only when the spine regains its mobility, strength and full range of flexibility, is is considered to be healed. Simply getting rid of the pain is not the recovery. The functional deficit that results in the pain usually persists even after the pain has gone. If it is not restored to normal this functional deficit can cause back pain again.

Myth: Back pain is more common as age increases.
Myth : An MRI or CT scan and other diagnostic tests are essential for treatment.
Myth: If and MRI or CT scan shows any abnormality, it needs to be operated upon.
