Common presentations

Women with lumbar back have pain while standing and sitting for prolonged periods. This is localized to central portion of the lower back. The pain may or may not radiate to the legs. 


Women who have sacroiliac pain describe pain in the back of pelvis and deep in the gluteal area. Pain persists throughout the pregnancy. Pain in exacerbated by any prolonged posture. Patients may or may not describe radiation to the back of the thigh as far as the hollow of the knee. Pain does not extend to the foot. Pain usually occurs while turning in bed at night. 


Women who have nocturnal lpain often describe a cramp in the lower back that is similar to the back ache during menstruation. It may be severe enough to awaken them from sleep. Unlike patients who have sacroiliac pain, women with nocturnal pain will not describe pain while turning in bed. 

Treatment Options

1.  Initial treatment for pregnant patients with lower back, sacroiliac, or 

      night pain consists of modalities such as heat and ice. 
2.  Drugs like acetaminophen (paracetamol) can be used to relieve pain. 

      NSAIDs like nimuselide and ibubrufen are contr-indicated during 

      pregnancy. 
3.  Masssage therapy may provide short-term pain relief. 

Treatment to be avoided

Pregnant women with back pain should avoid joint manipulation procedures. Traction and certain exercises are also contraindicated during pregnancy
