Types
of Injuries
Two types of injuries are common in sport persons :
1. Disc Injury : Traumatic events tend to occur frequently during sports. Each traumatic event produces some injury to the spine and surrounding structures. The cumulative effect of the injuries leads to muscle weakness and damage to the disc.
2. Sprains and strains : Sprains are ligamentous injuries caused by sudden violent contraction, sudden torsion, severe direct blows, or a forceful straightening from a crouched position.
Strains are defined as tears, either partial or complete, of the muscle-tendon unit. Muscle strains and tears frequently result from violent muscular contraction during an excessively forceful muscular stretch.
Most athletes who sustain sprains or strains commonly get them while lifting weights during their training sessions or while performing unusual movements. During such movements tremendous loads are placed on the lumbar spine, which may cause a temporary instability with a subsequent injury to the soft tissue surrounding the spine.
In case of sprains / strains there is pain and spasm localized over the lumbar area by the side of the spine. Range of motion, particularly while bending forward, usually is painful and decreased.
